Approved Engine Course Part 2 (AEC 2)
The Approved Engine Course Part 2 (AEC 2) is an enhanced continuation of the Approved engine Course Part 1 (AEC 1), building on the knowledge gained. Forming part of the new second engineer officer qualification for small vessels (less than 9,000kW/3,000GT), this course will further develop your understanding and skills through a mix of theory and hands-on practical training. Fully approved by the MCA, this 5-day course is perfect for the owners or operators of small inshore or pleasure vessels.
This Approved Engine Course is the second part of the AEC qualification, building on the foundations laid during part one and is delivered by a mix of theoretical and hands-on practical training. Students will cover a range of topics including maintenance procedures, legislation and safe work practices which makes this course ideal for owners and/or operators of smaller vessels.
This course forms a core part of the second officer qualification for small vessels under 3,000GT and meets the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s code of practice for safety of large commercial sailing and motor vessels as well as the Department of Transport’s ‘The safety of small commercial vessels – A code of practice’ and ‘The safety of small commercial sailing vessels – A code of practice’.

Who should do this course?
This MCA-approved course is the second part of the training required for those looking to work on commercial yachts and is a first level qualification for the MCA Engineer Officer of the Watch CoC commercial yacht pathway.
Recognised by Captains and yacht crew management companies, it is ideal for those wishing to begin their careers within the deck or engine department of superyachts or skippering smaller yachts. Students will be provided students with theoretical knowledge and some practical hands-on experience with electrical, domestic and management systems on a vessel enabling them to work capably as dual deck hand/engineers on yachts over 24m.
Having obtained the MCA Approved Engine Course certificate, it offers up the opportunity to fill the position of:
- Chief Engineer on sailing yachts over 24m in length and less than 200gt and 750 Kw within 60 miles from a safe haven
- Chief Engineer on motor yachts over 24m in length and less than 200gt and l500Kw within 60 miles from a safe haven
- Act as the Assistant Engineer on vessels over 200gt within 60miles from a safe haven (under the Large Yacht code LY(2)
